Tourism Australia says in its TV commercial,
“So where the bloody hell are you? で、なんでオーストラリアに来ないの?”

‘Bloody’ is a famous slang popularly known as the “great Australian adjective”. It’s can be used to express approval or disapproval. ‘It’s a bloody beautiful day’ or It’s a bloody awful day’—whichever bloody way you look at it, it’s a bloody useful word!

Simply the best bloody word in the bloody world to describe every bloody thing from a bloody good time to a bloody awful time to a bloody good bloke to a bloody mongrel. Got the bloody idea…that’s bloody good then! (Quite acceptable profanity in any bloody company really—even with the bloody Archbishop!)

このように、”bloody” は大変便利な言葉で、若い人がよく使う「ひどい、ひどく、ひでぇ！」などのように、良くも悪くも、後ろに続く言葉を強調するときに使われているようだ。もっと判りやすく言えば、「超！」みたいなものと考えてもいいだろう。
“hell” だって、直訳すれば「地獄」になってしまうのだが、Aussie Slang では ‘extremely good; excellent’ という、全く逆の意味に使われることさえある。

さてそれでは “bloody hell” となった場合、なんと訳せばいいのか？　いろいろとネット上で追いかけてみると、「イギリスのスラングで ‘an exclamation of surprise or frustration’」という辞書が見つかった。
そう、多分これが正解なのだろう。
従って、 “So where the bloody hell are you?” を日本語の文章にしてしまうと、「で、あなたどこにいるの？！」ということになって、”bloody hell” は”？！”の記号に化けてしまう。
英語力には全く自信はないが、以上が私なりの解釈である。
